Main opposition Democratic Congress (DC) leader Mathibeli Mokhothu has taken an indirect swipe at the leader of the Lesotho Congress for Democracy (LCD) Mothetjoa Metsing, suggesting that whoever supports the idea of a Government of National Unity (GNU) “supports Prime Minister Thoma Thabane’s cruelty” and his wife ‘Maesiah’s “interference with the running of government”.
Mokhothu was addressing a DC rally in Bela-Bela, Berea on Saturday.
He reportedly said: “Whoever supports GNU, supports Thabane’s cruelty and First Lady’s control of public affairs. DC says no to GNU. It has been overtaken by events. Elections or new coalition without Thabane. PERIOD.”
Metsing has been calling for government of national unity since June 2017. Many opposition leaders danced to his tune, but now Mokhothu who initially backed Metsing, wants him to drop the hard-line stance on GNU.
“Now that the motion of no confidence has been filed in Parliament, there are only two options before us: elections or new coalition government without Tom Thabane. Nothing else,” said Mokhothu.
The motion was filed on Wednesday by the All Basotho Convention (ABC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Koro-Koro constituency Motebang Koma and seconded by MP for Qalabane, Motlalentoa Letsosa, who is also deputy leader of DC. NW
