Maseru, June 17 (The Night’s Watch) – Students in the country have united in the call for urgent Prime Minister Dr Moeketsi Majoro’s intervention after the Lerotholi Polytechnic student, Manyai Theoha, was gang raped and murdered.
The United Lesotho Students Association (ULSA) on Tuesday called on Majoro to take every action possible to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.
“The incident happened in Maseru at Thabong, on June 5, 2020. Manyai was allegedly raped and killed after denying a proposal from a man whom it is assumed, had an affair with him,” ULSA said in a letter to prime minister.
The letter added that: “We call on the government of Lesotho (through your office) to intervene accordingly and ensure that the perpetrator(s) is/are made to face the wrath of the law and that justice is served.”
The raping and brutal killing of Manyai, second year business management student, has shocked the nation but have not sparked enough outrage across the country.
Rights groups have not publicly condemned the killing.
“We demand that your office make a statement on this specific case,” read the ULSA letter written by Tumelo Leboto and Karabo Lerotholi, marketing officer and secretary general, respectively.
Leboto and Lerotholi added that: “ULSA demands your office to invite donations for the family of Manyai Theoha (just as the American people did after the murder of George Floyd) in addition to the donation made by the Ministry of Education’s Principal Secretary (PS) Dr Thabiso Lebese.” NW
